Last CDP man standing may fall over

Mendocino could be going south

The continuous data protection (CDP) supplier ranks are set to shrink again if, as reported/speculated (by Byte & Switch) Mendocino Software is running out of money.

The last few years of CDP supplier activity look like this:-

- Alacritus - bought by NetApp in 2005

- Kashya - bought by EMC in 2006

- Mendocino - received strategic investment from HP

- Revivio - bought by Symantec in 2006

- StoreActive - bought by Atempo in 2006

- TimeSpring – bought by DoubleTake in Jan, 2008

- XOSoft - bought by CA in 2006.

Mendocino recruited a new president and CEO, Kathleen Holmgren previously a senior storage exec at Sun Microsystems, in November last year. It looks like the strategic HP investment isn’t going to be increased so as to safeguard the company.

Her recruitment was the last public announcement made by the company. The previous CEO, Steve Coleman, headed upwards to become chairman and look after the HP Partnership as well as improving its sales channel.

HP OEM’s Mendocino's InfiniView package as the StorageWorks Continuous Information Capture (CIC) product.

The trend is for CDP products not to be bought alone; instead they are an integral part of an overall data protection solution. Holmgren’s appointment looks like a last throw of the dice rather than a continuation of progress.

It may well be that recent economic woes in the USA, such as the supply of credit, mean that Mendocino has missed the VC bus, now headed for greener parts of the technology landscape.
