Imation's new solid state drives
posted on 11 August 2008 09:55
Imation has added two new solid state drives (SSDs) with a 16GB to 128GB capacity range to its line-up.
The new models, the PRO 7500 and PRO 7000 PATA, emulate hard disk drives (HDD) and provide the usual SSD benefits of very fast access and a high I/Os per second (IOPS) rate.
The SATA 3.0 Mbit/s interface PRO 7500 delivers a 130MB/sec sustained read and 120MB/sec sustained write speed. Its IOPS numbers are 83,000 sequential read and 19,000 random read I/Os. Its mean time between failure (MBTF) rating is1 million hours.
The PRO 7000 PATA uses the same Mtron technology as the PRO 7500, but with a legacy parallel ATA interface instead of the faster serial ATA one. The sustained read and write performance is the same but the IOPS numbers are much less: 27,000 sequential read and 18,000 random read I/Os. The idea is that equipment using PATA interfaces can be upgraded with this SSD.
These SSDS are generally faster than recent Super Talent SSDs. Micron's RealSSD products have faster read speeds and a longer MTBF.
Both new Imation SSDs are available now in the USA in both 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch formats. The starting price (16GB) for both products is $499.99.
