Industry standards for solid state drive (SSD) performance are coming closer as the SSD Alliance, a trade association, aims to start recruiting members from September.

Flash memory and SSD vendors such as SanDisk have pointed out the need for a standard way of describing SSD write cycle endurance. Sun has also been vocal in the need for SSD standards. A third strand of activity is coming from standards organisation JEDEC.

Standards could mean that different manufacturer's SSDs could have their write cycle endurance meaningfully compared. They might also facilitate a standard way of interconnecting flash chips and controllers. Other standards activities could focus on error correcting code.

Currently the SSD Alliance is an asociation of Taiwan-based flash product vendors with A-Data being a founding member. Possible new SSDA members include Microsoft, SanDisk and Seagate with Sun, Intel and Samsung as other likely members.  It might take a while for differing SSD industry perspectives from these geographies to mesh together though.
