Google's Search Appliance gets more capacity

Google has increased the capacity of its Google Search Appliance box, the one with a yellow front full of holes, to ten million items from the previous 3 million. It's also increased the appliance's functionality.

Search results can be presented in different prder based on customers' own ranking of different metadata items such as item type and author or searcher. Users can receive alerts when items relevant to them are added to the appliance.

There are more than 20,000 customers using the appliance and Google says it replaces multiple servers that would otherwise be needed to do the same job.

Google also offers a Google Mini Search Appliance. It does not have the metadata biasing options, automated grouping of search results by topic, advanced reporting to track every query and every click from every user, or RAID Support.
