Terabyte one and very quiet, green one

Hitachi GST has announced two new drives for digital video recorders (DVR) and set-top boxes (STB) - a terabyte one and a very quiet and energy-efficient one.

The CinemaStar 7K1000.B (pictured left) is a 3.5-inch SATA drive holding from 160GB to 1TB. It is a quiet and energy efficient drive. The 3.5-inch CinemaStar 5K320 has up to 320GB capacity and is even quieter and even more energy-efficient because it has what HGST calls CoolSpin technology.

This has the drive motor speed optimized for low power and acoustics, enabling Hitachi to claim it deliver the industry’s quietest, most energy-efficient 3.5-inch hard drives. This enables, HGST asserts, a new generation of DVRs and set-top boxes that store more hours of video, run more quietly and use less power.

Both drives have optional bulk data encryption (BDE) and a 1.2 million hour rating for mean time between failures (MTBF).

The CinemaStar 7K1000.B will begin shipping to customers worldwide in August and the CinemaStar 5K320 is expected to ship in September, 2008.
