EMC flashing CLARiiON?

Latest SSD destination in EMC's drive array product line

There is a story coming from reasonably well-informed sources that EMC is soon to announce the addition of a flash solid state drive (SSD) tier for its CLARiiON drive array line, most probably the high-end CX3 range.

An EMC spokesperson said: "At EMC World, we spoke about the many benefits of flash technology, EMC's investment in testing and qualification, and that we would incorporate it into our product portfolio where it made the most sense. Beyond that, we are not going to be able to provide any specifics as to announcements, products or timeframes."

EMC has announced and is shipping an upper tier zero of flash SSD storage for its Symmetrix DMX-4 storage arrays using STEC-supplied SSDs. Such a tier of storage costs more than the equivalent Fibre Channel drive capacvity but can deliver many, many more I/Os per second (IOPS) to accessing server applications.

CLARiiON arrays are positioned beneath the Symmetrix line in EMC's overall product range. The CX3 products support Fibre Channel drive use.
