Queues for 2.5-inch hard drives in Q3?

posted on 20 May 2008 07:38

Shortage may come

Booming demand for 2.5-inch hard drives could lead to a shortage in the third quarter of this year according to Taiwanese sources reported in DigiTimes.

The culprits are small form-factor PCs such as Asustek' Eeee PC and associated ultra-mobile PCs. The demand for these means more demand for 2.5-inch drives alongside existing notebook computer demand and ramping storage array demand.

The manufacturers of such drives are Seagate, Western Digital, Hitachi GST, Fujitsu and Toshiba. Seagate is lagging in the capacity stakes and will appreciate a rise in demand making its drives more acceptable. Western Digital's production is fully allocated through to September.

A shortage would drive prices higher - pleasing to the manufacturers no doubt.
