GREEN AGENDA DRIVES VIRTUALISATION AT GARTNER IT EXPO FOR ONSTOR
posted on 14 April 2008 14:02
ONStor Inc., the leading provider of scalable clustered NAS solutions for the enterprise, will be at the forefront of the green agenda for data centres at Gartner IT Expo, Barcelona, 12th – 15th May.
ONStor will be showcasing its solutions to enable companies to dramatically cut power consumption in IT environments by deploying NAS storage solutions, which have built-in advanced power management and file server consolidation technology.
According to a recent survey conducted by ONStor at the VMWorld event in Cannes, 68% of respondents believe that storage virtualisation will improve their organisations’ storage availability. This finding appears to validate the trend that storage virtualisation is now firmly in the technology mainstream and no longer viewed as a niche solution.
From the findings flexibility is now seen as a key factor driving storage virtualisation projects and viewed as just as important as both scalability and heterogeneity. This positions vendors such as ONStor with its massively scalable NAS solution at the forefront of the revolution currently underway in the market.
Other key findings include:
- Just over half (55%) of respondents believe that their current storage solutions will be able to scale to future needs.
- This means that in terms of market opportunity for potential vendors in the space some 45% of those questioned do not believe they have the right solutions in place now to future proof their investments.
- This figure demonstrates just how the market is overwhelmingly concerned with scalability issues and that scalable solutions are now a prerequisite for many IT departments.
- A massive 79% of those questioned are aware of how storage virtualisation can improve their fail-over processes.
- 61% of those questioned had not yet conducted a cost comparison of their existing storage solution against a NAS storage environment. Given the fact that 39% of the sample had already undertaken a project of this nature means that this is now moving up the value chain in IT departments.
Marcos Burnett, Country Manager, ONStor UK, stated: "What we find most interesting from this survey is how many IT departments aren't implementing solutions to address these challenges. However, what is clear is that scalability is at the forefront of the minds of those responsible for the data centre.”
“We have already announced our Go Green initiative to drastically reduce power consumption in the IT environment by deploying ONStor storage solutions, which have built-in advanced power management and file server consolidation technology. We have responded to the recent Climate Savers Computing Initiative, which calls for computer makers and their customers to adopt technologies that significantly reduce energy consumption. But it would appear from these findings that it will be market and technology drivers that affect change,” he added.
ONStor recently announced a new addition to its Pantera line of virtualized storage solutions with the launch of the Pantera 5000. A fortified version of its clustered NAS solution, the Pantera 5000 more than doubles the per cabinet capacity of the Pantera 2000 and offers higher performance to support the large, fast-growing file storage demands of medium to large enterprises and organisations with substantial digital imaging storage requirements.
