Transtec servers adopt solid state storage

Transtec's SSD injection

Transtec Calleo servers and Senyo PCs can now be fitted with solid state disks (SSDs) to make them operate faster, quieter, more robustly, and with lower energy needs.

The company's PROVIGO RAID storage systenm will also have an SSD capability added to it.

Transtec reiterates the well-known advantages of SSDs over hard disk drives (HDD): 50 times faster; latency of less than 0.1 milliseconds; and data transfers of 90 - 120MB/sec. It says their service life is 1 million hours before a breakdown and so they are just as reliable as HDD technology.  Transtec says nothing about wear-levelling though.

The additional robustness of SSDs against shock, vibration and high temperatures, makes them good for environments that would test HDDs in this regard. (Calleo server range pictured.)

The Transtec SSD cost is 17-20 euros/GB (£15 -18/GB).

Transtec SSD adoption is a typical move by a small and nimble manufacturer looking to grow by being quicker at new technology adoption than its established and slower competition. This is another straw in the wind that's blowing SSD technology across the storage landscape. It won't be that long before mainstream server suppliers adopt SSD technology.
