Long tail storage economics don't work
posted on 24 March 2008 11:37
There's no free storage lunch
Silicon Valley blogging journalist Tom Foremski has a penetrating mini-essay on why storage of Internet long tail items will collapse under its own unprofitable weight.
It may be nearly zero cost to store your photos on FaceBook but FaceBook has to pay for the storage of billions of items, some of which may never be seen again. The profit to be made from storing them is zero but the storage infrastructure still has to be paid for and, eventually, the Web 2.0 companies will winnow their unwanted content and scrap it.
