No tape but disk capacity approaches tape library levels
It was announced at the SHARE Technology Exchange Expo that Luminex' Channel Gateway has been integrated with Copan Systems MAID array to provide a virtual tape library (VTL) for mainframe users.
Luminex Software is a developer of mainframe connectivity and virtual tape products. Copan Systems provides its Massive Array of Idle Disks (MAID) architecture drive arrays which provide unprecedented storage density needing much less power in less space than any competing drive array on the market.
Copan's Enterprise MAID platform only powers up drives when requested by an application, ensuring no more than 25 percent of the densely packed drives are turned on at any one time. This enables customers to reduce power and cooling costs by at least 75 percent, as well as reduce the storage array footprint, and significantly increase the life of the disks. The partnership enables mainframe enterprises, which typically process massive volumes of “write once, read occasionally” persistent data, to seamlessly offload that data to Copan's MAID products via the Luminex software.
Art Tolsma, CEO of Luminex, said. ““With our Channel Gateway, Luminex has provided a path for new technologies into the mainframe environment. By supporting Copan Systems’ Enhanced MAID platform with our Channel Gateway, (mainframe) customers now have access to a uniquely valuable solution that provides the density and economics of tape with the reliability and accessibility of disk.”
Mark Ward, president and CEO of COPAN Systems, said. “Mainframe clients can now continue to leverage their familiar mainframe environment, uninterrupted, while seamlessly taking advantage of COPAN’s Revolution 300TX for faster backups, retrievals, density and power savings.” EMC recently introduced its tapeless mainframe VTL offering.
