Gartner advance brief on Windows Server 2008
posted on 22 February 2008 15:37
Gartner research vice president John Enck has this comment on on Windows Server 2008:
"There is no single compelling reason for a business to start running Windows 2008 server this year– Windows Server 2008 is a collection of many features and updates. Different organisations will be attracted to it at different speeds - and some not at all.
"For example:
- IIS users will welcome the new features in IIS
- Users with broad Active Directory deployments will welcome the Read-Only Domain Controller
- Users deploying 64-bit versions of Exchange or SQL Server will be attracted to broad 64-bit support in the platform.
- Organisations that are analysing virtualisation technology will take a hard look at Hyper-V.
… and so on. In other words, we don’t expect broad deployment of Windows Server 2008 in calendar year 2008. However we will see adoption of it for certain roles (including those shown above).
We anticipate broader deployments to occur in 2009. Between now and 2009, users will have an opportunity to test their applications under Windows Server 2008 and software vendors will have an opportunity to come out with new versions of their software supporting Windows Server 2008."
Windows Server 2008 is going to be launched at a special event in Los Angeles on February 27th, 2008.
