The need for messaging archival
posted on 19 February 2008 17:20
Osterman Research has published a new report on message archiving.
The research highlights some of the trends and challenges facing CIOs in developing a corporate messaging strategy as well as underlining the dangers of failing to implement an effective email archival system highlighting the experience of companies such as:
* The case of Murphy Oil, USA, Inc. v. Fluor Daniel, Inc, where the cost of restoring 2.3 million emails on 93 backup tapes was estimated at $6.2 million.
* SEC fine of $2.5 million for Merrill Lynch for not properly archiving email.
* Fine to Morgan Stanley of $3 million for not providing email content
The report states that email storage is growing at an average rate of 35 percent annually and the fact that three out of five decision makers cite the growth of messaging storage as their leading messaging-related problem. It also points out that email contains roughly three-quarters of the information that individuals use on a daily basis and that a large proportion of corporate email users spend more than two hours per day generating and using content stored in emails.
