Toshiba’s six billion dollar NAND flash punt

New factory to cost big bucks in attempt to raise NAND flash market share

Toshiba is spending $6.6 billion to build a new NAND flash memory plant in north .

 

 

This is according to a story in the Asahi Shimbun paper via Reuters. Toshiba itself has not confirmed the spending plans.

 

 

It is the world’s number 2 flash memory fabricator and hopes to have a new plant producing chips in 2009. At that point its existing plants will run out of capacity. The new plant is said to be able to produce 200,000 wafers per month.

 

 

According to iSuppli Toshiba had 27 percent of the NAND flash market last year. It builds flash cips in partnership with Samsung, the market leader with a 42 percent share.
